“The Swedish Torpedo”

Swedish swimmer Anders Olsson is paralyzed from the waist down.  Nonetheless, he swam a 2.6 kilometer race in 13 degree Celsius water from Alcatraz in San Francisco bay to the California mainland in the record time of 24 minutes, 32 seconds, leaving in his wake an astonished field of hundreds of  experienced swimmers.

“I didn’t think it was true that I won,” he said. ” Then I thought it was really amazing since they had actually laughed at me when I came here to compete.”

Anders Olsson, a 45 year old  named Swedish Handicapped Athelete of the Year in 2008 and 2010 and has won Paralympic gold medals, is the first swimmer without-functioning legs to compete in this event.  The second place swimmer was more than four minutes behind Olsson.  Those with whom Olsson competed nicknamed him “The Swedish Torpedo.”   See the original story in its entirety in  The Local.

What is Anders Olsson’s occupation?  He operates a Swedish laser therapy clinic.
